There are now several methods of electronic communication available to members of the SH and EAHP.
They include listservs, bulletin boards and email programs within the Memberclicks online directory
program. The following includes a list of these resources, how they are structured and how to use them.
- Listservs
Listservs are automated email programs created for large group communications. Listservs use a
member's registered email address as username and password.

Listservs are controlled at two levels:
- Email based commands available to members and administrators, and

- Web based interfaces, available only to administrators.

We have created two types of listservs for members, open listservs, which anyone can join, and closed
listservs, whose membership is restricted to members of the two societies, or smaller subsets of the
Societies. To minimize spam and "Oops" messages, most of our listservs are also moderated listservs.
This means that all messages are screened by a moderator before release to members.

Current listservs, and their form (email addresses are "active"-click to send message):

Basic listserv functions and commands:
- To send a message to a listserv, send to listserv by name, ie SOC_HEME@listserv.dartmouth.edu and
send. If you have been enrolled, your message will be accepted by the listserv and sent to administrator
for approval or sent to membership. If you are not a member, or have changed your email address since
the membership list was last updated, your message will be rejected.

- To rejoin or request new membership to a listserv, do the following:
Send a message to: listserv@listserv.dartmouth.edu or listserv@health.state.ny.us
In body of message write: subscribe <name of listserv> <your first name last name>
Example: subscribe soc_heme Norman Levy
The moderator will get the message and add you to the list.

- To request removal from a list:
Send a message to: listserv@listserv.dartmouth.edu or listserv@health.state.ny.us
In body of the message write: signoff listname
Example: signoff soc_heme

- To request that listserv messages are only sent once daily:
Send a message to: listserv@listserv.dartmouth.edu or listserv@health.state.ny.us
In body of the message write: set listname digest
Example: set soc_heme digest

- To request a larger list of listserv commands:
Send a message to: listserv@listserv.dartmouth.edu or listserv@health.state.ny.us
In body of the message write: info refcard
Example: info refcard

- Bulletin boards
The societies currently utilize two bulletin boards:
- The Memberclicks Bulletin board, containing the Job Board and the Resume Board

- The Quick-topic Bulletin board that we used for the David Mason tribute, and for recent listserv submissions that solicited further responses.

The rationale for the creation of bulletin boards was twofold:
- Longer term storage for items like job offerings.
 - Reduced listserv email traffic for discussions that only some of our members might find interesting.

Neither of the two bulletin boards utilized provide all the functionality that we desire, so we are
still looking a replacement.

The Memberclicks job and resume bulletin boards are accessible via two routes, with differing
permissions.
- A direct link from the SH/EAHP website index page "Job/resume bulletin board". This is available to all visitors and allows visitors to read the bulletin board and post/edit new entries.

- An indirect link through the Memberclicks online membership directory, which requires a username and password. Once in the Memberclicks module, one can do everything available via the direct route, and in addition remove outdated job notices.
This direct/indirect structure allows members and non-members to post a job offering, but allows only
members to remove or alter an existing entry.

The Memberclicks bulletin boards are also moderated. Submissions must be approved before they are
visible to visitors. Submissions initiate an email message to the moderator, requesting review and
approval. Once again, N. Levy is the current moderator. I try to respond as quickly as I can.

The Quicktopic bulletin board is currently another form of moderated communication. If a member
submits a listserv entry that solicits response from members, I shift that query to the Quicktopic
bulletin board, and then redirect the members to a web address for submission viewing and response.
Members can then decide whether they want to follow the discussion by retaining the url, requesting email
notification of any submissions, or setting up an RSS feed. Hopefully a future product will allow direct
entries by members, with automated email notification of all members of the submission.

- Memberclicks Online Membership Directory and Resources.
Official membership information is retained by the Secretaries of the two societies, Carolyn Lane for the SH and Christine
Arkes for the EAHP. At regular intervals, the official membership lists are uploaded into the
Memberclicks online directory. Members can enter the online directory to update their information
between these official uploads. Any updates are forwarded to the executive secretaries for entry into
the official membership directories. Entry into the online directory is controlled by username and
password. If you can't remember either, select the forgot password link, fill in information and the
username and password will be sent by email.

If you are a new member that has not been uploaded into either the online membership directory or the
listservs, contact the Secretaries listed above for assistance.

Within the directory, one can look up members by last name, Quicksearch, or by more detailed advanced
search. This returns a short version of membership information, which can be expanded by further
mouseclick.

There is also an email component within Memberclicks, based on an initial search. This email program
is more advanced than the one built into the listservs, allowing enclosures and graphically based word
processing. As an example, if I do an advanced search by country=Germany, I can retrieve all members of
the SH and EAHP residing in Germany. If I want to send an email to all of the retrieved members, I would
go to the menu bar and select Directory>Contact Center. This will bring up an email form with the To:
section populated by the email addresses of all members retrieved in the search. One can upload
enclosures into this email program, which is not possible in the cruder listserv structure.

There are several other resources built into Memberclicks, listed in the pulldown menus. Exploration
is the best way to learn them.

- Website
The SH and EAHP have an integrated website, served from the USCAP server. Both societies retain their
own domain names, Socforheme.org and Haematopathology.org, but both point to a common
URL. George Clay is our webmaster, Dan Jones and Norman Levy are the SH web moderators and Lorenzo
Leoncini is the EAHP web moderator. Linked resources specific to each society are aligned along the left
and right margins, common resources are duplicated in both margins.

We are in the midst of updating the common index page with drop down menus and a cleaner page. Soon
come.

Requests for new additions or corrections to the website should be sent to the society moderators, Dan Jones, Norman
Levy or Lorenzo Leoncini.
